How to support environmental justice in Jackson, MS and beyond

Jackson, Mississippi's already poor infrastructure was heavily damaged due to recent flooding, resulting in a lack of clean water for nearly 180,000 residents. As of today, water pressure has returned, meaning toilets can flush and showers can run, but it doesn't mean the water is clean. Due to the impact on the city's water system, it's unclear when water will be safe to drink again; residents are still advised to boil it first.

This isn't the first time Jackson residents, who are primarily Black, have faced such an issue; the city's water system has been deteriorating for years, with no steps taken to improve it. Severe weather patterns are exposing poor infrastructure across the country, primarily in communities of color.
